Bidaai is a tale of two sisters,
Sadhna (beautiful-fair complexion) and Ragini (unattractive-dark complexion). Sadhna is adopted by her Mamaji.

Life is amusing for Sadhna because she is beautiful but society does not behave nicely with Ragini, due to her dark complexion and she has to face a lot of challenges because she is not good-looking.

Both the sisters love each other immensely and are good natured but society’s approach towards them makes Sadhna’s life difficult as her mami ji starts differentiating between them. Sadhna is treated like a step-daughter in the house and feels punished for her good looks but Ragini loves her unconditionally.

All-in-all, the story is about these two sisters whose 'looks' determine their happiness. This unique story embarks the journey of two sisters and makes one question the belief - "Are beautiful people happier than ugly Bettys?"

Overview
The story reflects society's opinion of beauty. Ragini and Sadhna are forever facing being compared to one another as one is fair (Sadhna) the other dark (Ragini). The show is based on the problems that Ragini's family faces in finding her a husband and the rejections and assaults on her self esteem that Ragini faces due to the colour of her skin. Being closer than real sisters, Sadhna feels her cousin's pain and tries her best to find Ragini her Prince Charming, even if it means sacrificing her own happiness.

[Ragini & Sadhana's Family

Sadhna Alekh Rajvansh
Sadhana is Mamaji's sister's daughter. Seventeen years ago, Sadhana was left in her mamaji's care by her dad who left for America after her mom's death. She grew up with her cousin Ragini (mamaji's daughter). She and Ragini are closer than real sisters and best friends as well. Her beauty is her biggest curse, due to which she had to grow with her mamiji's hatred, as she always compared her ordinary looking daughter, Ragini to the beautiful Sadhna. She is married to and loves her husband Alekh Rajvansh very much.

Ragini Ranvir Rajvansh
Ragini is Sadhana's jiji (cousin), best friend and they love each other more than anything in the world. Ragini is dark complexioned and not considered beautiful. Society looks down on her because of that, she has faced many difficult times, but she always has her cousin Sadhna's love and support. She is the love-interest of Ranveer as 'Anamika' while they talk as wrong-number friends. During Taj Maha utsav Ranvir and Ragini come face to face, and she is shocked. Ranvir leaves in a shock and Ragini is hurt. Later on Ranvir proposes her clearing the misuderstanding that he left not because of her color but because he was shocked as they never recognized each other. Also he states the misunderstanding which increased his confusion. Ragini also confesses she loves him a lot! After much drama, they are now engaged. But Vasundra seems to have changed her mind about Ragini because of what her close friend told her. Ragini is now happily married to Ranveer.She, Ranveer, Alekh and Sadhna are now gone on a honeymoon to Kerala.

Mamaji (Prakash Chand)
Mamaji is Sadhana's mom's brother, who took care of Sadhana and loved her like his own daughter. He showers his love equally on his own daughter Ragini and niece Sadhana. He is a greatly admired man.

Mamiji (Kaushalya)
Mamiji is Ragini's mom, who dislikes Sadhana because she is beautiful. Sadhna has proven time and again that she is a genuinely caring person. She was and is against Ragvirs marriage because Sadhna will be close to Ragini. Mamiji herself is dark skinned and because of this she has become a racist. Sadly she can be extremely verbally and emotionally cruel to Sadhna at times.

Vinu
Mama-Mami's son, Ragini's brother. He is a good person yet is easily influenced by his wife. Because of his wife, he keeps lying to his parents that he earns less, just so that they do not ask him for any financial help. He works in the Rajvansh industries which is a secret to his family members except his wife and Sadhana. Naveen Rajvansh sets him up and makes it seem like he signed a 2 Crore deal with another company. Naveen told his uncle (Alekh's father) about this and blamed him. Naveen tells Vasundhra about it and Vasundhra, furious, calls the police, goes to Vinu's home and tries to get him arrested. Just as he is caught, he runs away from home. Ragini's lover Ranvir finds evidence to prove Vinu innocent, and then Vinu is released.

Malti
Vinu's wife. She is a selfish and an insensitve person who likes to keep her husband wrapped around her little finger. Her favorite phrase is Jhoot to main bolti nahi.. (I never tell lies...) yet she almost always tells lies and then goes on instigating family members against each other. She enjoys creating misunderstandings in the family and lives for it. She loves money, therefore is always trying to keep her husband's earnings to herself to go shopping rather than giving it to Vinu's parents. Yet she recently realized the error of her ways and is now helping Ragini to unite with her love Ranvir, is less concerned about money and more concerned about family. She thought that her and Avni were childhood friend and addressed her as "Kammo" but realised she and her husband Naveen cheated her. She and Ragini are now very close.

Naniji
Mamiji's mom. She comes to visit the family at times. And when she does, she keeps poisoning Mamiji's mind against Sadhana, telling her that everyone will always like Sadhana over Ragini and therefore, Ragini will never be happy if they are always together. However now she is impressed and happy with Ragini and Ranveer's relationship. She is also much more positive to Sadhna.

Kishan Chand (Sadhna's father)
He left for America, 17 years ago and left little Sadhna in mamaji's care. He went to the US to make enough money to come back and fulfill all of Sadhana's wishes, and his life's dream was to see his daughter, Sadhana's Bidaai. He dies in a plane crash on his way back from America.

Gujri
The house maid, who's very close to the family and is treated like a family member. But once Malti claimed that Gujri had stolen her necklace. Gujiri seems to have left the family.

RAJVANSH FAMILY

Vasundra Rajvansh
Mother of Alekh, Ranveer, And Dolly And wife to Indrajeet. She is a woman who wants things done her way and will do almost anything to keep it like that. She is fair skinned and thinks herself to be beautiful. She is happy only with fair skinned daughter-in-laws. She is in fact Ambika's sister.

Indrajeet Rajvansh
Vasundra's husband and the man of the house. He is a honest and sincere man and cares deeply about his children's happiness. He is also very kind to Sadhna and her family. He approves of Ranveer and Ragini's relationship (soon to be married) and gets very mad when Vasundra says no to their relationship just because Ragini is not attractive.

Alekh Rajvansh
Vasundra and Indrajeet's eldest son. When Aelekh was younger he had an accident which caused injury to his brain causing some problems. He is very sweet and caring and is a amazingly wonderful artist. He is married to Sadhna who he is very close to and fond of. He soon relies on Sadhna for a lot of things. He loves to keep her happy and loves her. He calls her "DOST" which means "friend".

Ranveer Rajvansh
Vasundra and Indrajeet's younger son. Ranveer is a handsome caring boy who studies in the USA. He loves his family and siblings. His girlfriend was Sonia who really just liked them for their wealth and was a fake. On the engagement day Ranveer finds out Sonia's true colors and is crushed. As destiny plans its on fate Ragini is the love-interest of Ranveer as 'Anamika' while they talk as wrong-number friends. During Taj Maha utsav Ranvir and Ragini come face to face, and she is shocked, Ranvir leaves in a shock and Ragini is hurt. Vasundra and Indrajeet's daughter. Dolly is extremely proud of her status and is very negative towards lower classes. She especially dislikes Sadhna because she is Ragini's sister. Ragini and Dolly go to the same dance class where Dolly dislikes her because she is a better dancer and is greatly admired for her talent. Dolly goes to her mother for a lot of solutions when problems for her occur. She is extremely jealous of Ragini and is mean and cruel to Sadhna. She is in London at the moment studying in college.

Satyen Rajvansh
Indrajeet's younger brother. Satyen is a caring jolly person who always brings laughter to the family. He approves of Ragini and Ranveer's relationship and believes that beauty is not everything. He is Ambika's husband. He and Ambika have a son, Naveen.

Ambika Rajvansh
The wife of Satyen and Vasundra's older sister. She is caring and sweet and very understanding to Sadhna. She cares deeply about everyone and believes in good. She is extremely loved by Aelekh. She is in fact Vasundra's older sister. Vasundra has never loved Ambika which hurt Ambika for many years. She and Satyen have one son, Naveen.

Naveen Rajvansh
Satyen and Ambika's Son. He works in the Rajvansh industries. Naveen Rajvansh set Vinu up and made it seem like he signed a 2 Crore deal with another company. Satyen and Ambika's beautiful daughter-in-law and Naveen's wife. She is equal with him in his bad deeds. She is also Malti's childhod friend. She and Naveen cheated on their family and Ragini and Sadhna's families. She loves causing misunderstandings. Vasundra seems to be fond of Avni and Naveen.

Guni and Pritham Rajvansh
Avni and Naveen's kids. Guni is a girl and Pritham a boy. They were previously taught by Sadhna and seemed to be very fond of Ambika, Satyen, Sadhna, Aelekh, Ranveer, Ragini, and Mamaji.

Sheetal Rai Singahinia (Vasundra's friend)
She is fair-skinned and makes her appearance when it is Ragini's and Ranveer's turmeric ceremony. When all the ladies go to Mamaji's house to apply turmeric on Ragini she is shocked about the way Ragini looks and claims she know's vasu's choice well and that Ragini can never be vasu's choice. She say's her opinion on Ragini loudly and on hearing this Ragini becomes sad and Vasundra furious. She also states that Vasu gave up her daughter's proposal for Ragini. Her daughter too like her is fairskinned and beautiful, her daughter has not been seen but it could be that Sonia is her daughter ( although these rumors are false)'
